As
the respected critic/writer Floyd Levin once said
"her poignantly intriguing quality reaches
to the core of a composer's intent . . . she caresses
each lyric." Writer Roger Crane once noted
"Janice Anderson does something a lot of
singers cannot do, which is convey truth and emotion,
in other words 'tell the story.' Songs have words
and they have music and there is the performance
of these two. With very few singers do you get
it all. Well, Janice is thankfully one such singer."
Her rapidly growing Southern California audience
wholeheartedly agrees with these accolades.
Janice,
who is a Los Angeles native, recalls that her
love of music, singing and dancing are her first
memories. As a teenager, her talent was recognized
in various artistic performances that included
not only singing, but also dancing, acting and
an eventual blending of these art forms. Singing
is, at its best, a form of acting. The vocalist
must be aware of the point of view, the character
that is singing and the situation. Singing is
story telling in song. So, Janice brings all three
of her considerable skills - singing, dancing,
acting - to her live performances.
Janice
is a jazz-influenced singer. Much like Peggy Lee,
she doesn't reinvent on a grand scale or dazzle
with vocal pyrotechnics but, rather, she draws
you in with the clarity of her delivery. It's
subtle and unforced. Given her acting talents
and with moves honed by years of dancing, she
can bring a song to life and give it depth. Speaking
of her songs, repertoire is yet another of Janice's
many musical gifts. Her selections are truly refreshing.
She sings the beloved standards wonderfully well.
For example, her easy patient way with Gershwin's
"Embraceable You" is downright ecstatic.
But she occasionally includes some unjustly neglected
songs often including the overlooked verses and
seldom-heard alternate lyrics.
You
can judge a singer by the accompanists she keeps
and the very best musicians love to work with
Janice. Janice has performed with pianist/composer/producer
Daniel May, pianist Tom Garvin, drummer Joe LaBarbera,
bassist Darek Oles, guitarist Larry Koonse, guitarist
Anthony Wilson, bassist Putter Smith, pianist
Chris Dawson, among others. Janice has also studied
and performed with notable vocalists and vocal
coaches, such as Cathy Segal Garcia, Barbara Morrison
and Tierney Sutton.
Janice
is a marvelous and captivating performer. In addition
to a lovely voice, she demonstrates all the vivacious
flare needed to make an audience happy. Because
she enjoys performing, her audiences also enjoy
themselves. Many lucky patrons have seen her performances
at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA),
Spazios, Santa Monica's Loew's Beach Hotel, Casa
Del Mar Hotel, the legendary Hermosa Beach Lighthouse,
Ca del Sol, Steamers in Fullerton, the now defunct
The Jazz Spot, Sportsman's Lodge, the downtown
Biltmore Hotel, the Pasadena Playhouse and the
Pasadena Playboy Jazz Festival, just to cite a
few venues at which Janice has appeared
.
Janice is presently curating the Mount Olive Jazz
Vespers Concert Series in Santa Monica.
Janice
Anderson was born to sing. She is a class act.
